Scattering Services

After cremation has taken place, the next decision involves what to do with the ashes (or cremated remains).  Some choose to keep these in their home, others choose to have them placed at a local cemetery, or you may wish to scatter the ashes in a meaningful place.

For those who wish the scattering to take place without family members present, we are pleased to offer a Scattering Service where we will do this on your behalf at Bronte Creek Provincial Park.  Click here or see below for more information.

Scattering cremated remains

Cremation provides families with more time to arrange where and how to scatter the ashes. While there is no policing agency overseeing scattering, there are some basics you should know:
  • If you plan on scattering ashes on private property, you'll need permission from the owner.
  • You may scatter cremated remains on Crown land, including land covered by water, if it’s unoccupied (e.g., provincial park, conservation reserve, Great Lakes) and there are no signs or postings that prohibit scattering.
  • There are no regulations regarding scattering on uncontrolled public lands; you need to use your own judgment.
  • You should not scatter ashes within 100 yards of public roads or trails.
  • You may purchase rights to scatter the ashes in a cemetery.
  • Scattering at sea must be done at a minimum of three nautical miles from the coastline.

Purely Cremation and Burial - Scattering Service: $195

For those who prefer a simpler form of final disposition, at an unspecified time our staff member will scatter the cremated remains upon unoccupied Crown land at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. Our Scattering Service includes transportation of cremated remains to the designated area, all entrance fees, and scattering performed by one of our funeral professionals.

    How to Scatter Ashes

Cremated remains bear little resemblance to other types of 'ashes'; they look and behave a lot like small-grained gravel. However, there are some fine-grains mixed in so be sure to check the wind direction before scattering into the air or a body of water.
