Cremation Services FAQs

  • How much will I have to pay for the cremation?

When you enter into a discussion with us about the cost of your loved one's cremation, whether on the phone or online, we will always be transparent about our pricing and all options available to you.  Our basic cremation package is $1999 + tax. Any additional fees are strictly optional, and may include items such as urns or keepsakes. Our Price List includes a breakdown of the applicable fees.

  • How long must we wait after their death before we can cremate a family member?

There is no specified waiting period before cremation can occur. However, unlike a burial, cremation is irreversible. This requires us to be "extra diligent" in obtaining cremation authorization from the legally identified next-of-kin, as well as those from any necessary agencies (such as the coroner).  During this time, the deceased will be held in a secure, refrigerated environment. You can expect the return of your loved ones remains within 10 business days.

  • Why should I prepay?

Prepaying for your cremation or burial offers peace of mind and financial relief by removing the burden of payment on your loved ones during a difficult time. It locks in current prices, protecting against future cost increases. In Ontario, your funds are safeguarded by the BAO's Compensation Fund, even if the funeral home closes. Preplanning also provides clear guidance for your family - reducing stress and confusion when it matters most.

  • How are your costs so competitive?

We operate as a transfer service rather than a traditional funeral home, which means our overhead costs are significantly lower. Our model is built around online arrangements, allowing us to streamline operations and pass the savings on to you. Additionally, we’re fortunate to be affiliated with Smith’s Funeral Home, which provides added support without the expenses of maintaining a full-service facility.

  • What is a cremation container/casket (and do I need one)?

A container, like a casket or cremation container, is required for cremation for several reasons: to protect the deceased during the transfer process from the funeral home to the crematorium, to ensure safe and dignified transportation, and to provide a rigid platform for the body to be rolled into the cremation chamber. Additionally, cremation facilities have specific licensing and regulations that require a container.

We have a basic, no frills cremation container that we include in our cremation price.

  • What should I do with my loved one's ashes?

There are many things you can do with cremated remains. There may come a time when you know exactly what you'd like to do with them, but that may not be right now. Be patient; the right way for you to care for them will become apparent in time. After all, there are a lot of options: scattering them on land or water is one option, as is placing them in an urn, or even a separating portion to hold in jewellery or a keepsake urn.  As we said, there is no have-to-do; there's only a want-to-do (and you are in complete control of it). If you're curious about your options, just give us a call. We'll share what we know.

  • Does this mean we don't need to plan a commemorative service?

The great thing about cremation is that it allows for a celebration or memorial to be held at a later date. Cremation is merely the physical disposition you intend to provide your loved one at their end-of-life. A commemoration service or celebration of life is for the living - the individuals emotionally impacted by the death deserve the same level of compassionate attention as their departed loved one. Choosing cremation allows for a larger "window-of-opportunity" in which to plan a meaningful celebration-of-life that is right for you and your family. Your funeral professional can guide you in making all the necessary service arrangements, if you would like more information in this regard.
