Funeral Special Support Program

Municipalities throughout Ontario provide financial assistance for funeral services on behalf of residents whose estates are unable to cover the costs.
Contact can be made with the Special Support Program in your area immediately following a death. Special Supports will not accept an application to pre-approve arrangements for a person which is not deceased.

Please note: When a municipality pays for funeral expenses, it retains the Proof of Death Certificates and initiates efforts to recover the costs from the deceased’s estate and/or CPP Death Benefits. Once the municipality has completed its review and is satisfied, it will release the certificates to the family. This typically requires a written request and may take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. The funeral home is not permitted to issue Proof of Death Certificates without authorization from the municipality.

    ODSP

Ontario Works is a social assistance program that supports individuals experiencing financial need. Similarly, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) provides financial assistance and related services to individuals living with disabilities.

In terms of funeral arrangements, both Ontario Works and ODSP may offer financial assistance for eligible individuals who are unable to cover these costs. This support generally includes essential funeral expenses, such as burial or cremation, transportation, and burial plot fees. Because eligibility requirements and coverage details can vary, it is important to contact the local municipal office for specific guidance and support.

Please note: All funeral-related services must be approved by the municipality before any contracts are signed with a funeral home, crematorium, or cemetery.
